Jesus didn’t tell his followers to become louder, more visible, or more impressive. He used two images that are both ordinary and demanding: salt and light. In the Sermon on the Mount, he said his people are “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world,” and then he pushed the point further: let your good works be seen, not so you can be praised, but so that others can see God’s character reflected in your life.
